A special workshop led by the Frankfort High School Earth Club will be offered to high school, middle, and elementary school students who are interested in starting recycling/composting/gardening at their schools.
See below for all workshop descriptions.
We will also have storytelling and face painting for kids!
Last but not least, Jennifer Zingg will have a booth for kids (and adults!) to make really cool animals out recycled plastic bottles. This activity will be a fundraiser for the Rye Indigo Memorial Fund.
Bike Ride from Frankfort to the festival sponsored by Walk/Bike Frankfort!!
People who want to enjoy the scenic route to the festival by bike can join a fun ride sponsored by Walk/Bike Frankfort!
Walk/Bike Frankfort will lead a ride, rain or shine, from Frankfort to the festival in Millville. This scenic 7-mile ride is OPEN TO ALL. There will be some hills, but you are encouraged to make the journey whatever your experience level...no one will be left behind. We'll be leaving in plenty of time to make it to the first workshops no matter our pace. We'll meet at the KSU campus, at the intersection of E. Main Street and MLK at 2pm, and leave shortly thereafter. For those who'll be driving to the meet-up spot, there should be plenty of parking in the KSU parking lots.
There will be 2 separate return groups:
1. There'll be a group that stays to the end of the festival at 10pm, and ride back then.
2. For those who'd prefer to ride back in the daylight, there'll be a ride leader returning around 7:30pm.

Dancing Workshops: We are excited to offer three dance workshops in the gymnasium this year!
Folk Dancing Workshop: 4-5pm
Led by Don and Sylvia Coffey, this workshop will take you back in time and have you dancing the same dances folks enjoyed during colonial times! You will swing your partner, do-see-do, and learn the fundamentals of square dancing, contra dancing, and circle dancing. This is great fun for the whole family. Take this workshop and you will be ready to attend a real old fashioned square dance in the Millville gym hosted by Kentucky Heartwood on October 15th at 7pm!
Modern Dance/Ballet: 5-6pm
Join our gifted and enthusiastic workshop leader, Rachael Williams-Hale, for an introduction to modern dance and ballet. If you’ve ever wondered how it feels to spin like a ballet dancer or what modern dance is, now is your chance to learn in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Be ready to kick off your shoes and move!
Clogging Workshop: 6:30-7pm
Led by Frankfort’s own Jeri Katherine Howell, this workshop will get everyone's blood pumpin' and feet a-rarin' for the wonderful music laced throughout the day! The workshop is for all ages and for every level; and, yes, that means if you have never stomped your foot in your life you can still participate and have FUN during this workshop. We will learn the basic flat footing steps anyone would need for some good old time music, as well as fun flourishes and combinations. Hard-soled shoes work best, but any shoe (even none!) will do just fine. So, folks, muster up some courage, be ready to get in touch with your inner mountain souls and dance!
Cutting Your Household Carbon Workshop: 5 pm
We hear about climate change every day, yet rarely do we know how much carbon we release into the atmosphere in our personal lives. This workshop is designed to introduce you to the steps it takes to identify and then reduce your personal carbon footprint.
Rachel Harrod and Connie Lemley of the Frankfort Climate Action Network will lead the workshop.
Workshop length: approximately 30 minutes
Solar Oven Workshop: 6:30 pm
Have you ever had a meal cooked by the sun? Solar ovens are a simple way to have an energy-free meal as long as the sun is shining! Workshop leader Joel Dufour has used solar ovens for 17 years. He will describe the construction, use, and maintenance of solar cookers as well as cooking techniques.
Solar oven manuals will be available for sale and samples of food cooked in the oven at the festival will be given at the workshop.
Silent Auction Make sure to check out the silent auction near the food vendors in the upper festival area. Winners will be announced at 8 pm. We cannot send items to winners. Please be present to claim your prize.
Featured Bands
We are delighted to showcase excellent entertainment again this year.
The Metafours – approximate stage time: 5:00pm-5:45pm
The Metafours are an eclectic folk ensemble from Frankfort, Kentucky. They are comprised of four members: Anna Hess on violin, Nicholas Holmes and Jeri Katherine Howell on guitar and vocals, and Nat Colten on banjo, cello, guitar, and vocals. The Metafours’ original music draws on influences as diverse as folk, bluegrass, classical, and popular traditions. They are not easily categorized but may be best described as the anti-frontman band. All members contribute to the creative process and share the spotlight equally, creating a harmonic and soulful musical experience.
Patterns – approximate stage time 7:45pm-9pm
Patterns was formed in Berea, KY in 2010 out of the collective musical efforts of Aaron Anderson (guitar, vocals), Tyler Mills (bass, vocals), Thomas Usher (guitar, keys, vocals), and Jacob Hamrick (drums). Each member brings a myriad of influences to the table, both musical and beyond, from West African polyrhythms to theatre, math, space, the culinary arts and more. Patterns plays all original music and favors compositions that appeal to the musician and listener alike. They like to surprise their audience with unexpected twists and turns in their music, at the same time playing for today’s generation and innovating and expanding their own musical horizons.
Patterns has won two Battle of the Bands contests in 2011, one at Buster’s Billiards and Backroom and another sponsored by the University of Kentucky Student Activities Board. They have played in Berea, Lexington, Louisville, Pippa Passes, and more. They released a short album entitled A Life Resonant EP in 2010, and are currently working on their first full length album, to be released this year. Check them out at bandpatterns.bandcamp.com, myspace.com/bandpatterns, and on Facebook.

About Kentucky Heartwood
Kentucky Heartwood is a non-profit organization that has worked since 1992 to protect and restore the integrity, stability, and beauty of Kentucky’s native forests. Our focus is the Daniel Boone National Forest in southeastern Kentucky. The 700,000 acre public forest boasts the state’s highest concentration of rare species, one of the highest concentrations of archaeological sites in the southeast, over 3,000 miles of clifflines, and attractions like the Red River Gorge.
Running waters on the Daniel Boone National Forest support about 60% of Kentucky’s native fish species, which represents 28% of all southeastern fishes and 18% of all native freshwater fishes in the United States. Mussel species in streams on the Daniel Boone comprise 22% of mussel species in North America. Overall, Kentucky ranks third in the nation for aquatic fauna diversity.
The Daniel Boone’s intricately folded topography creates specialized habitats for endemic species, such as white haired goldenrod, found nowhere else in the world. The forest itself is highly diverse, distinguished by outstanding biodiversity, pockets of old growth, and unique upland bogs and glades.
Because it stretches for 140 miles from north of Morehead to the Tennessee border along the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau, the Boone represents our best opportunity to restore functioning forest ecosystems in the state.
Run by volunteers, Kentucky Heartwood passionately defends the Boone from logging, mining, development, and four wheeling. We have helped to dramatically reduce logging levels and ATV abuse. Protecting forests is increasingly important in this era of climate change. Large forest blocks stabilize the atmosphere, sequester carbon, and conserve water.
The Music Festival is run entirely by volunteers with the help of donations from our sponsors. Visit our booth at the festival, buy a T-shirt, and learn more about our forest advocacy. We would be thrilled to have you as new members!
Organizer Jane Marie Watts was director of Kentucky Heartwood from 2007 - 2008. Nine generations of her family have lived in the Millville area; she went to elementary school at the Millville School where the festival is held.
Contact her in the evenings at 859-873-9772.
Organizer Chris Schimmoeller was director of Kentucky Heartwood from 1992 to 2002. She is currently on the Board of Kentucky Heartwood and lives in the Frankfort area. Contact her at 502-226-5751 ext. 3.
