Kentucky Heartwood
Wild places sustain and define us; we, in turn, must protect them.
UPDATE #2: The Senate voted 92-8 in favor of S. 47 without Sen. Rand Paul's amendments. Thank you to everyone who took time to call our legislators in support of our Daniel Boone National Forest.
UPDATE #1: T he Senate will be addressing the Paul amendment, along with other amendments, TODAY (Feb. 12) at 4:30 pm and then move to a roll call vote on final passage. Keep those calls coming!
U.S. Senator Rand Paul has introduced two amendments to the Senate Natural Resources Management Act (S.47) that could devastate the southern half of the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Calls to legislators are urgently needed.
One of Senator Paul’s amendments (S.Amdt.141) would require the U.S. Forest Service to sell an undisclosed acreage of the Daniel Boone National Forest in McCreary and Pulaski Counties. The language directs the Secretary of Agriculture (currently Trump appointee Sonny Purdue) to sell national forest land “along” U.S. 27 from Burnside to the Tennessee border, liquidating a highly biodiverse section of Kentucky’s national forest lands. The bill leaves the acreage and locations solely to the discretion of the Secretary of Agriculture, with no limitations or public input. The sale could be anywhere from 1 acre to 150,000 acres, and could potentially affect Beaver Creek Wilderness, the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, Barren Fork, and habitat for a large number of state and federally listed endangered species. While this particular region includes a great deal of public land, there is ample private land in the Burnside, Pine Knot, and Stearns/Whitley City areas – and in between – that are open and situated for development. In fact, less than a third of the section of U.S. 27 identified for land sales passes through or abuts national forest land (see map at the end of this post). And there are plenty of locations with closed businesses and deteriorating structures in the area that are in need of redevelopment.
The other amendment introduced by Senator Paul (S.Amdt.140) would compel the Forest Service to allow the development of roads and utility right of ways through nearly the entire southern half of the Daniel Boone National Forest to reach “the waterways feeding into Lake Cumberland through the Daniel Boone National Forest in Rockcastle County, Pulaski County, Laurel County, Wayne County, McCreary County, and Whitley County, Kentucky, for the purpose of installing docks, boat slips, and marinas.” This covers the entire watersheds of the Rockcastle, Cumberland, and Big South Fork rivers. These waterways, and the forests that surround them, provide habitat for a wide range of federally and state endangered species and include some of the most cherished and popular recreational areas in the forest.
There are already several shuttered docks and marinas on Lake Cumberland, private areas with existing access, and current business owners struggling to sustain and grow their operations. To the extent that roads or other access are needed to reach any specific locations, the Forest Service can already allow access after following the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and other laws and regulations - including allowing for public input into the process. Senator Paul’s amendment would take away authority and discretion from the U.S. Forest Service and completely cuts out public input.
National forest land is not an impediment to economic development in the southern part of the Daniel Boone, however Senator Paul chooses to spin the issue. Our public land is an asset. Whether Senator Paul is trying to curry favors with donors, or just exercise his ideological opposition the very idea of public lands, it doesn’t matter. He’s wrong, and this awful sell-off of our Daniel Boone National Forest needs to be vigorously opposed.
Calls to legislators are urgently needed. In addition to Senators Paul and McConnell, please take the time to call other members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and ask them to oppose Senator Paul’s Amendments 140 and 141 to Senate Bill 47, the Natural Resources Management Act. Let them know that Rand Paul is not representing the interests of the majority of Kentuckians.
Recommended legislators to call:

The US Forestry Service is will be told to sell it to some investors for a small percentage of what the land and resources are worth. The investors will sell the timber off to China. Then the taxpayers will have to clean up their mess. Jesse Helms tried the same thing in the 1980s with the Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina and the deal fell though. Call the Sierra Club. They will stop it.

SO SHOCKING! This place used to be called by the Indian name, Ywahoo Falls. It is the place where 100 Cherokee children had been gathered for protection after word spread that Governor John Sevier was sending the Tennessee militia to kill the Cherokee children as a solution to the "Indian problem." He is said to have commented that the way to rid the settlers of the Indian problem and open up land was to "kill the nits." Many years passed with the story of the massacre of the 100 Cherokee children being passed through generation of Cherokee, and being viewed as lore by others. The Cherokee placed a "unofficial" memorial marker at the site in 2006. But it was taken down because authorities said there was no proof. Years later, when a team of men were in the area dealing with some diseased trees, some of them went into the cave under the falls and discovered the whole surface covered with the bones of small children! This was reported, an archeological dig took place, and the story of the massacre of the children became official. Two of our ancestors were there fighting to protect the children, Jacob Troxell and his Cherokee wife (daughter of Chief Doublehead), Corn Blossom. Corn Blossom was killed there and Big Jake Troxell was said to have died there too, but secretly escaped down to Sand Mountain in north Alabama, remarried and lived 20 more years. This was a point when the Cherokee decided they were beaten and would fight no more. A number of them, including some of our ancestors, moved down into north Alabama and passed as White from them on, keeping their true identity secret. There is a grave marker at Ywahoo Falls honoring Jake Troxell at the site of the massacre. I am STUNNED that Rand Paul would propose this! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_at_Ywahoo_Falls

My parents, me and my siblings & our children and our grandchildren have been enjoying parts of this forest for many, many years now. My classmates from kindergarten through high school along with parents, siblings, children & grandchildren have also enjoyed this area for many years. It is totally unthinkable for it to be sold. We spend freely on lodging, meals, entertainment, and more, all with local merchants. If this land is butchered so Rand Paul can pander to his constituency, we'll go elsewhere. If he were genuinely interested in the well being of the residents, he'd contribute to the move to make this into the recreational capital of the East, which it well could be.

Most of the land in question is comprised of Ridgeline and Forest on it's second or third growth after being cut repeatedly since the late 1800's. It poses no value to anything other than a 'Good Ole Boy' wanting to build a mansion with a view on a bluff above some water. The ridiculous thing is the number of times the county has been passed over for any meaningful economic development. I guess you can take whatever you want from one of the poorest counties in the nation. The question now is who wants the land?

Guess what Kentucky, this land is already owned by the federal government not Kentucky. One way to prevent the horrible forest fires that devastate National Park lands is through allowing harvesting of timber and reforestation. Eco tourism requires roads, power lines, water and internet. ..all basic infrastructure. Lands sold to private corporations pay property taxes to fund schools. Selling strategic areas of national forest is a win-win.

No win-win. If all our National Parks and Forests are seen as quick caches of revenue generation for every generation of exploitation that comes along....our landscape, what makes our nation grand and great and beautiful, will soon lay denuded and monotonous. Our lands do not belong to a single generation anymore to rape at will. We are stewards for future generations to have unspoiled places to cherish nature's beauty and solace. There are plenty of roads and internet and infrastructure. Human beings need places to escape from that to replenish and reflect on what God has given. If one doesn't believe in God....one can reflect on what Nature gives us...if we are not greedy and selfish.

Being sold to the highest bidder is a travesty! Once they are gone, we'll never get them back. Rich corporations will rape the land and build condos.

Rand Paul....you are obviously spending too much time sitting in an office or in the Senate rather than hiking through trees and over streams. Human beings need the enrichment that only nature can provide. If you are willing to sacrifice part of our heritage, and that of your children and grandchildren...to reap some temporary, superficial gain in earth's resources, you obviously have not spent enough time bathing in the splendor that only untouched time has contributed to nature's unspoiled beauty. We cannot replace time. We cannot replace beauty that, once spoiled, will be abandoned and forgotten, only to be replaced by monotonous manmade vistas. Please don't promote the exploitation of Daniel Boone National Forest. Go out....walk in it. Breathe it in. Love it....as we do all of our National Parks and Forests.

Shared this post and made calls. When I actually got to talk to a staff member, they were all aware of amendments 140 and 141 to SB 47 and the opposition to them...so, I’d say we are getting our point across. Whether it makes a difference remains to be seen.

The federal government owns too much land already. Sell it off. Let it become land that can benefit the communities around it. McCreary County was at one time the third poorest county in the nation. Maybe that’s because the USFS owns 90%+ of the county. There are no jobs or industry there that pay a decent wage. I’m sorry but tourism will not ever make up the difference. Just go look at Pigeon Forge. Yes there’s a lot of people and money there but the jobs are mostly service jobs that pay a low wage in an area where real estate is only for the wealthy. There is a wide income gap there. This land could be sold

Only about 5% of Kentucky is public land, most of that federally-managed national forests and some national park lands. McCreary County is economically distressed, but the presence of public land is not the problem. The county has about 100,000 acres in its private, taxable land base. There's plenty of land for development, and lots of land for sale. There are seven counties with about the same, or less, taxable land base that don't have 175,000 acres of public land and trails as an asset funded by taxpayers outside the county.

I am so sorry Rand Paul has set his sights on our Daniel Boone NATIONAL Forest for profit. Let's face it, he would not have sponsored such a bill if there was not profit for him involved. The members of Congress all ready have raped other lands for profit and NOW a National Forest? I don't know why J. Marie thinks the State is broke, but if she/he knows something I don't, how did she/he come up with the idea that the money from the sale of National Forest land would go to help this the problem...STOP, THINK. The bottom line for Rand Paul is his own bank accounts, the good old boy "You pat my back and I'll pat yours" idea. Take some here and some there, it will never be missed and we can develop it. WHAT kind of development? Certainly NOT for Pensions..The Pension "Drama" are all from the mind of our Governor. McCreary Co. is mentioned as being POOR. How assured are we that selling Daniel Boone Forest Land IS GOING TO THAT?? Many questions to be answered before we "give away" our National lands to the lowest bidder. WHERE will the money go, who will have control of it?? and on and on....

I will say I choose to live in Kentucky because of the beautiful land available and the access to DBF and other natural resources. I moved here from Maryland (also very beautiful state) until...our state reps. starting selling off every bit of real estate surrounding protected areas. Our beautiful state of Maryland turned into one big traffic jam connecting city to city without anything beautiful at all. The view of the Chesapeake Bay gone from the normal bridge crossings from suburbs and replaced with interstates housing developments and shopping centers. Baltimore City? None of it helped the city. Revitalization was the word. Mass destruction was the result. Please don't let Kentucky fall into this illusion. Moving into a bigger city will bring you bigger paychecks. Leave nature where she belongs.

Anyone that thinks selling land to develop is the solution to money problems is extremely short sited and needs to visit the forest alot more than they do. Land, forest land is a very limited resource. if we choose to make money more important than that kind of habitat for animals, insects, plants and fertile forest soil we will surely get what we deserve: a barren planet that no longer sustains life.

Don’t sell the land you’re not intitled to. Plus why get rid of a beautiful forest that inhabits animals and THEIR homes. It’s also a treasure to the state. Why destroy it for buildings we don’t need or whatever the hell they want to put there. Sorry but the money hungry politicians need to get out and see the beauty nature can offer. Not destroy it, just so more people can move in and make a mess of it. The earth will soon have no more forests at the rate humans are going. Take a step back and see.

Discouraging to see the Senators priorities are so out of touch with reality. Nationally, National Forest Recreation economic impacts are greater than all other uses combined (logging, mining, grazing). The National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) Program has data to back it up. Forests are surveyed every five years.
