Kentucky Heartwood
We need forests we can get lost in; trees that make us gape; streams we can drink from.
Wild places sustain and define us; we, in turn, must protect them.

Hike to Stonecoal stream near Cave Run Lake
Saturday, June 25 10:00 AM
Join Kentucky Heartwood's Ecosystem Defense Coordinator, Chris Karounos, and Director, Lauren Kallmeyer, to explore a stream restoration site near Cave Run Lake.
The Hike: approx 3 miles (round trip) of hiking, mostly on a gravel forest road. We will walk down the valley to Stonecoal stream, explore the restoration site, walk up some tributaries, explore the area that has yet to be bulldozed, and identify the plants and animals that live there. We will walk uphill to get back to our cars. The hike will take about 2-3 hours.
Meeting point: We will meet at 10AM at Morehead Save a Lot. We will send the specific location and directions several days before the trip. From that location we will consolidate into fewer vehicles for the last couple of miles.
What to wear and bring: Appropriate footwear is closed-toes shoes (no sandals) with decent tread. Trail runners will be fine but hiking shoes or boots will be better if you want to explore the "wetland." You will be exposed to ticks and mosquitos. Please bring sufficient water and snacks for the day.
Please be aware the Kentucky Heartwood is not equipped to provide any emergency care, and participants are responsible for their own well-being.
Registration: Pre-registration is required by filling out the form below.
